David Liebman

David Liebman is an acclaimed jazz saxophonist and flautist. Born in Brooklyn, New York City, he pursued his interest in jazz by studying under saxophone guru Joe Allard and other greats as Lennie Tristano and Charles Lloyd. After graduating from New York University, he began to devote himself to the full time pursuit of being a jazz artist. During this phase, Liebman took the leading organisational role as Founder and President of Free Life Communication, a cooperative of several young musicians. The first half of the 1970s was filled with tours, recordings and the incredible experience gained by being on the band stand with two revered masters of jazz. Liebman first secured the coveted saxophone/flute position in the group of John Coltrane's ex-drummer, Elvin Jones. Soon, he reached the zenith of his apprenticeship period when Miles Davis hired him, going on to appear in Miles' albums - Big Fun, On The Corner and Dark Magus during this period. He has consistently been placed among the top three finalists of the Downbeat Critics' Poll since 1973 in the Soprano Saxophone category, gaining the top place in 2011 as well as being first in the Jazz Times Critics' Poll in the same year. His teaching activities at universities and in clinic settings, along with an ability to articulate the intricacies of the jazz language, aesthetic and technique, have taken him literally around the world as a result of his varied musical directions and expertise on several instruments.
