Reji Ravindran has a musical experience which has spanned for more than 15 years now. Born in Mumbai, Reji was bitten by the music bug during the mid-90s. After collecting loads of music cassettes, CDs & vinyl in his youth, he decided to give a shot at DJing in 1999. Since that year, there has been no stopping for this multifaceted wizard as Reji is currently one of the most prolific names in Mumbai’s booming alternative & electronic music scene.
For the longest time in his career, Reji has been recognized as an educator within the music fraternity. After understanding India’s unique music scenario in the early 2000s, the DJ professor designed & implemented his own syllabus at famous DJ schools in Mumbai like Spin DJs (2000 – 2002), DJ Nasha’s Academy (2004 – 2007) & Livewires (2007 – 2008); training more than 500 men & women in the art of DJing, turntablism & music production. By putting his money where his mouth is, Reji has also been a successful battle DJ. Under his rayG moniker he has won the DMC (Pune – 2000), Times War of the DJs (Mumbai – 2007) & Kingfisher Ultra DJ (2010) championship titles in the past.
Reji was also the first ever turntablist in an Indian nu-age metal band called Scag (2000 – 2001) and also the brains behind India’s earliest hip hop collective called “itch” (2003 – 2005). In December 2008, world renowned travel magazine, Time Out Mumbai, mentioned him as “one of Mumbai’s most influential DJs” in its cover story. Reji has also been promoting fresh talent & sounds through his DIY One Sunday (2008-2009) & Mixtaped! (2013) nights. He has also been a label DJ, promoter & talent scout for labels like Chill Om & Air Snare Records.
Behind the decks, Reji has always kept an emphasis on quality music with longer shelf life; sans short term crass commercial appeal. He is popularly known for blending within a wide spectrum of eclectic beats & breaks, without being bound by tempos, genres & styles. His deep musical knowledge & interesting track selections have got him gig bookings within India’s elite music, art & fashion circles. This also helped him clinch long lasting residencies at famous Mumbai nightspots like Zenzi Mills, Bonobo & The Den.
After smashing dance floors all over India (large & small) over the years, 2013 has been a pivotal year in Reji’s career. He is currently the course director, author & instructor of the educational modules on DJing at The True School of Music (Mumbai), India’s biggest & most contemporary music university.
