Inspirational Musicians Who Overcame the Odds

Keep Memory Alive's 16th Annual "Power Of Love Gala" Celebrates Muhammad Ali's 70th Birthday - Inside

There are a lot of inspirational musicians who beat the odds and became big hits. Many people have taken inspiration from them and pursued music as a career. Learning about them can provide you with motivation to get through music school and help you decide that you want to turn your music education into a career. Just when you don’t think you can do anything or be anything, turn to these musicians to remember what they overcame.

Stevie Wonder may be one of the most well-known musicians who beat the odds. He was born six weeks early and was blind at birth. At the age of four, his mother became a single mother of six. Stevie turned music into his life, and he learned piano, drums, and bass, as well as participated in the church choir. He has more than 30 Top 10 hits to his name as well as more than a dozen Grammy awards. He became a success despite the setbacks of his life.

Rick Allen is the drummer from Def Leppard. They were responsible for some major hits in the 1980s, such as “Pour Some Sugar on Me” and “Hysteria”. He began his career with Def Leppard, but they had not become a big success yet. At the age of 21, he was involved in a car accident that caused him to lose his left arm. He fell into depression, assuming that he would not be able to be the band’s drummer any longer.

However, Rick worked with Joe Elliot, the lead singer, to design a drum set that could be played with one arm. Def Leppard went on to be one of the bestselling bands of the decade and Rick Allen was behind that success.

James Durbin is a singer who went on to place fourth within the 10th season of American Idol. He was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome as well as Tourette’s shortly after losing his father at the age of nine. He managed to overcome these health problems to go on and establish a wide range with his voice as well as an incredible rock persona.

Jewel is another success story, particularly of perseverance. The singer, who hails from Alaska, began a music career in her late teens, though she was not an instant success. She spent many years living in her van and playing small coffee shops in order to make any money that she could. She could have easily given up her career choice, but she stuck with it. In the end, it paid off with a record deal for “Pieces of You”, an album that made her a huge success and landed her all over MTV in the late 1990s.

There are plenty of other inspiring musicians who went on to become great, despite the issues that they dealt with growing up, either circumstantial or health related. As you learn more about music and wish to pursue a career, keep a positive attitude and remember that if these people can beat the odds, so can you.
