Born and brought up in Shillong, India, Amarnath started with Tabla lessons at the age of 6. By the time he turned 12, he laid his hands on his first guitar, which began a period of exploration and discovery. After completing school, he decided enrol at the International College of Music, Malaysia. During his time here, he had the opportunity to work with some prominent figures in the Malaysian music industry, such as Frank Ong, Greg Lyons and David Patrick, with performances at some of the country’s premier venues like The National Stadium, One Utama and The University of Malaysia, Terrengannu.
Amarnath moved to Boston in 2007, to attend Berklee College of Music, graduating in 2009 with a Bachelors degree in Jazz Composition. Amarnath had the opportunity to study with and attend workshops by world renowned musicians such as Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, Branford Marsalis, Mike Stern, Tommy Emmanuel and Esperanza Spalding. He also worked closely with some of the most progressive musicians in the Boston jazz scene such as Tim Miller, Sal DiFusco, Ken Pullig and Bob Pilkington. On his return to India, Amarnath has performed at The 3rd Delhi International Jazz Festival, ICCR – Delhi, The Roots Reggae Festival – Shillong apart from numerous TV and Radio appearances for All India Radio, RedFM, Prasar Bharti and NDTV.
