Famous Musicians Who Went to College
Many musicians say they don’t need to go to school. They don’t have the desire to go to college or music school, which is dangerous. While musicians may have talents that were developed outside of the four walls of school, there are certain things that can be learned while in school. Not everyone who goes to music school is going to be a famous musician. However, there are many skills that are taught to help people have at least some kind of career within the music industry – or elsewhere in another industry that they enjoy.
Some of the most famous musicians went to college, and we have compiled a list of 10.
Carrie Underwood is mostly identified as being an American Idol winner. She won the fourth season of the TV show, which was back in 2005. She is also a songwriter and actress. Prior to going on American Idol, she was in college, and she continued to finish her studies after winning, and graduated in 2006 from Northeastern State University, in Oklahoma. She also graduated magna cum laude, and she holds a bachelor’s degree in mass communication with a concentration in journalism.
Childish Gambino has a long list of credits after his name, including being a well-recognized rapper, and actor, comedian, producer, writer, and singer. He was a writer on the NBC comedy series 30 Rock and had an acting role on several comedy series. He is also a graduate from the Tisch School of Arts from New York University and has a degree in dramatic writing.
Common made his debut in 1992, and experienced a rise to fame in the 1990s. Prior to becoming a rapper, he studied at A&M University in Florida and earned a degree in business administration.
John Legend has won a Golden Globe, an Academy award, and nine Grammys. After he graduated high school, John was offered entry into Harvard University as well as scholarships from a variety of other colleges. He chose to attend the University of Pennsylvania, studying English with a concentration in African American literature. While there, he was the musical director for Counterparts, a jazz and pop a cappella group.
Lady Gaga is recognized internationally as a pop star, with such songs as “Just Dance” and “Poker Face”. She was studying at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. She eventually end up dropping out because she needed to focus on her music.
Ludacris is a well-known rapper around the world for an array of different songs, and he has also been featured in various pop-culture films. He studied music management at Georgia State University in 1998. Although he dropped out to pursue his musical career, he enjoyed his time at the University.
Madonna has been in the spotlight since the 1980s. She continues to evolve and add more credits to her name. She is a songwriter, performer, actress, and businesswoman. She has also attended the University Of Michigan School of Music, and it was after going to college that she decided to move to New York City in order to pursue a career within modern dance.
Sara Bareilles is a pop singer who first hit the charts in 2007 with her single “Love Song”. She has since been nominated for five Grammy awards. What many people don’t know about her is that she graduated from UCLA with a degree in Communication Studies. Communications and music go hand-in-hand; so even after she is done being a pop singer, she has the skills to succeed within the industry.
